Black Dog leads the pack
There were bottles of Black Dog all round as leg-weary competitors
came home in the annual Great East Run, an event co-sponsored
by
Elgood & Sons Limited - appropriately so, as the competition
is
organised by the Bungay Black Dog Running Club.
The roads and lanes around Bungay were the setting for February's
run, which featured more than 650 competitors in various age
ranges from all over the country, with local runners featuring
strongly amongst the honours.

WINGING INTO WISBECH
The 'Norfolk Goldwings' held their annual 'WingDing' at Banham in September,
and over 400 bikers attended from all over the UK. The proceeds from the
whole weekend went to their two chosen charities
- the East Anglia Air Ambulance & Cromer
Lifeboat Station.
As the brewery supported them last year through one of Elgoods' pubs, the
'Norfolk Goldwings' asked if Elgood's would be the main sponsors for this
year. As no photographer was present at the event, Elgoods suggested that
a few of them come along to our Brewery Open Weekend, and we were
happy to welcome them accordingly. Some of the members and machines
are pictured at the brewery with Trade Director Terry Stork.

Nigel Elgood celebrates
his 70th birthday
Happy
Birthday
Nigel!
Elgood's Visitor Centre was the venue for friends, family and colleagues
of Nigel Elgood as they gathered to celebrate the Chairman's 70th
birthday. Festivities began when his grandchildren each presented
him with a birthday cake.
Following a speech by Terry Stork (Elgood's Trade Director), Nigel
was presented with a gift from all the staff at the brewery.
Guests then proceeded to quaff beer, wine and
champagne and enjoy
the ample supply
of birthday cake!

The Waggon and Horses at Milton
is celebrating a
double success
Having been selected by the Cambridge Branch of CAMRA as its Pub of
the Year, it has gone on to beat the nominations from the county's other
three CAMRA Branches to become Cambridgeshire Pub of the Year.
The Waggon has been run by Nick and Mandy Winnington for the past seven
and a half years, during which time it has been a fixture in CAMRA's
Good Beer Guide. The pub is owned by the Wisbech brewery, Elgoods, and
is their most southerly outlet; it sells a full range of their superb
beers including Cambridge Bitter (rarely seen in Cambridge) which was
voted Britain's best bitter in CAMRA's most recent Champion Beer of Britain
awards.
Paul Ainsworth, Cambridge CAMRA's Pubs Officer, said "The Waggon
scored very highly on all our main Pub of the Year criteria - great quality
beer, a welcoming atmosphere, good value for money. What impressed the
judges in particular though is that this is a pub with real character
- a far cry from the identikit bars which now dominate the city centre".
The Waggon gets a lot of its individuality from the unashamed eccentricity
of Nick the landlord. He's a former parliamentary candidate for the Raving
Monster Loony Party and his famous collection of hats can be admired
hanging from the pub ceiling.
The next stage of the competition sees the Waggon up against the top
pubs from neighbouring counties for the East Anglian Pub of the Year
crown; the result will be known by the end of August.

A RECORD
field of 650 runners took to the roads and lanes around Bungay in Suffolk
to contest the 8th Great East Run organised by the Bungay Black Dog Running
Club.
David Miller, of Woodbridge Shufflers Road Running Club,
led from the start to win the 20k event in a fast time of 1 hour 7 minutes
and 42 seconds. It was the first time 35-year-old Miller had entered the
Great East Run. He Said: “I really enjoyed it. It is a good course.”
Helen Cawthorne, of Redhill Road Runners, travelled from Derbyshire to
win the women’s event and came 61st overall, in a time of 1 hour
24 minutes and 30 seconds. Anne Flanagan, of Norwich Road Runners, was
second in 1 hour 25 minutes 55 seconds.
The first member of the host club to finish was Ian Taylor, who came 17th,
in 1 hour 16 minutes 31 seconds. There were also prizes in a range of
ages for men and woman this year. The run, which took place on Sunday,
was sponsored by Elgoods Brewery, who awarded a bottle of Black Dog mild
to each finisher.
There were 516 finishers in the event which attracted runners from over
20 counties. Race director John Wharton’s team of more than 90 ensured
that the event ran smoothly, despite a field that was 150 up from last
year.
