Elgood's win International award
Elgood & Sons Ltd has been awarded a Bronze Medal for ‘Golden Newt’, in The International Beer Challenge this year held in Germany.
This competition is open to all brewers and is the World’s largest bottled beer competition; over 30 expert judges from the international beer industry blind tasted 300 beers. Therefore this a fantastic achievement for Elgood’s to be recognised in this way by our peers, and to gain bronze in such a prestigious contest.
Golden Newt recently won The Eastern Region Champion Bottle Beer Competition, held by the Society of Independent Brewers Assoc’ (SIBA) and because of this it was automatically entered into this challenge.
Elgood’s Golden Newt is brewed from finest quality East Anglian malted barley with a blend of malt wheat, amber malt and English fuggle and golding hops. The fine hop aroma is from American Cascade hops (Golden Newt is named after the colony of Great Crested Newts residing in the brewery gardens.
Our Pubs, Free Trade Customers, Wholesalers, Supermarkets etc, now have the opportunity to present this outstanding beer to their customers.
Please raise a glass and enjoy!

Wisbech & District Historic Vehicle Club Road Run
On Sunday 9th August 2009, 220 Entrants took part in the Wisbech & District Historic Vehicle Road-Run.
Blessed with good weather, Classic and Vintage vehicles of all types took to the roads between Wisbech and Peterborough, and also featured in a static display at the end of their journey. It was a wonderful spectacle to see the vehciles, some dating back to the 1930's.
Elgoods were once again the main sponsors of this charitable event and would like to thank the committee and competitors for all their hard work in making the day such a success.
Elgoods have great pleasure in being involved in helping to raise money for many worthy causes.

Elgoods
present new beer
to mark 900 years
A specially produced beer to mark the 900th anniversary of Ely Cathedral was launched today, in support of the Cathedral.
The Bishop of Ely, Dr Anthony Russell, was presented with two crates of Cathedrale, which has been specially produced by the Wisbech brewer, Elgood & Sons. Head Brewer, Alan Pateman presented the beer in the Lady Chapel at the Cathedral.
The bottled beer is available from retail outlets across Cambridgeshire and West Norfolk with 10% of the sales raising funds for the restoration of the Cathedral.

“We are most grateful to Elgoods for this generous gesture and their continued support of the Cathedral,” said Dr Russell. “Celebration and festivity have always been a part of Church life. In monastic times the Cathedral would have brewed its own beer. The Church continues to advocate, and shares the common concern for, responsible drinking.”
“Elgoods have had a long association with the Cathedral, in particular providing beer to “baptise” the stages of restoration works around the building, an old tradition dating back many centuries,” said Alan Pateman.

“This special bottled ale, a premium pale beer, is made from finest malt, from Cambridgeshire, and English hops. We hope the sale of the bottles will help to promote the work of the Cathedral, and are delighted to support the restoration work of this magnificent building,” he added.
Another distinctive beer has been produced locally by The City of Cambridge Brewery. This unique blend has been brewed to commemorate “the faithfulness of people across the Diocese of Ely over nine centuries” and is named Three Crowns after the Diocesan crest. |
Three Tuns chosen to launch
new CAMRA scheme
An Elgood's pub in Wisbech has been chosen to launch a new scheme which promotes pubs that sell locally-brewed cask ale.

Teresa Pope and Terry Stork with locals.
Peterborough Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) chose the Elgood's pub - Three Tuns in Wisbech, to launch the LocAle scheme.
The scheme builds on the growing consumer demands for quality local produce and increase the awareness of green issues.
Local pub licensees attended an event last week to receive their certificates and record their pubs endorsement of the scheme.
Terry Stork, trade director at Elgood's, said: "In this recessionary period I am pleased that Elgood's have been picked out by CAMRA as the local brewer.
"Hopefully this will increase the presence not only in our own pubs but in free trade pubs in the area.

New Appointment
Elgood & Sons Ltd are pleased to announce
the appointment of Marcus Beecher as our new Sales Manager.
Marcus has been in the licensed trade since 1984, dealing initially
with brewing equipment sales, then moving on to become a free-trade
sales representative for one of the leading national brewers.
In recent years Elgood’s has developed rapidly with our
award winning ales available nationwide; and because of this
growth we are very pleased to have secured Marcus in this important
role at a time when we need strong leadership. |
WELCOME TO OUR
NEWEST RECRUIT!
Following the sad demise of Brewery Cat “Blackie” (see
obituary below), we are pleased to introduce our new trainee
mouser “Scruffy”.
The black kitten we had hoped to recruit had a better offer,
and Scruffy was next on the shortlist. She has settled in well
(although resident cat Spot has yet to make friends!) and,
as can be seen on the photos, has already begun to check out
her surroundings.
We were all relieved when Brewer accepted that “Black
Shuck” was hardly a suitable name for such a cute kitten! |
Obituary
“One of our Brewery cats, Cambridge (better known in
the Brewery as Blackie!), came to the end of his working life
last week, literally! He succumbed to old age and was put to
sleep at the local vets. He has the honour of being buried
in the Elgood pet cemetery in the Brewery Gardens, where he
was laid to rest by his co-workers a short distance from the
graves of the Elgood family dogs!
 |
Cambridge (or 'Blackie')
the Brewery Cat |
Cambridge had been on duty
24 hours a day (apart from prolonged cat naps!) controlling
the mice in the Malt Store and Mash Tun room for the last 16
years. He joined the company as a kitten with his sister, a
tabby called Fuggles (or “Princess” by
some of the workers), also now sadly deceased, and gave us
long and loyal service.
A replacement, black kitten has been
recruited and will be introduced to our other cat, Spot, as
soon as possible. The Head Brewer wishes the new cat to be
called “Black Dog” or “Black
Shuck”!” |
Black Dog leads the pack
There were bottles of Black Dog all round as leg-weary competitors
came home in the annual Great East Run, an event co-sponsored
by
Elgood & Sons Limited - appropriately so, as the competition
is
organised by the Bungay Black Dog Running Club.
The roads and lanes around Bungay were the setting for February's
run, which featured more than 650 competitors in various age
ranges from all over the country, with local runners featuring
strongly amongst the honours.

WINGING INTO WISBECH
The 'Norfolk Goldwings' held their annual 'WingDing' at Banham in September,
and over 400 bikers attended from all over the UK. The proceeds from the
whole weekend went to their two chosen charities
- the East Anglia Air Ambulance & Cromer
Lifeboat Station.
As the brewery supported them last year through one of Elgoods' pubs, the
'Norfolk Goldwings' asked if Elgood's would be the main sponsors for this
year. As no photographer was present at the event, Elgoods suggested that
a few of them come along to our Brewery Open Weekend, and we were
happy to welcome them accordingly. Some of the members and machines
are pictured at the brewery with Trade Director Terry Stork.

Nigel Elgood celebrates
his 70th birthday
Happy
Birthday
Nigel!
Elgood's Visitor Centre was the venue for friends, family and colleagues
of Nigel Elgood as they gathered to celebrate the Chairman's 70th
birthday. Festivities began when his grandchildren each presented
him with a birthday cake.
Following a speech by Terry Stork (Elgood's Trade Director), Nigel
was presented with a gift from all the staff at the brewery.
Guests then proceeded to quaff beer, wine and
champagne and enjoy
the ample supply
of birthday cake!

The Waggon and Horses at Milton
is celebrating a
double success
Having been selected by the Cambridge Branch of CAMRA as its Pub of
the Year, it has gone on to beat the nominations from the county's other
three CAMRA Branches to become Cambridgeshire Pub of the Year.
The Waggon has been run by Nick and Mandy Winnington for the past seven
and a half years, during which time it has been a fixture in CAMRA's
Good Beer Guide. The pub is owned by the Wisbech brewery, Elgoods, and
is their most southerly outlet; it sells a full range of their superb
beers including Cambridge Bitter (rarely seen in Cambridge) which was
voted Britain's best bitter in CAMRA's most recent Champion Beer of Britain
awards.
Paul Ainsworth, Cambridge CAMRA's Pubs Officer, said "The Waggon
scored very highly on all our main Pub of the Year criteria - great quality
beer, a welcoming atmosphere, good value for money. What impressed the
judges in particular though is that this is a pub with real character
- a far cry from the identikit bars which now dominate the city centre".
The Waggon gets a lot of its individuality from the unashamed eccentricity
of Nick the landlord. He's a former parliamentary candidate for the Raving
Monster Loony Party and his famous collection of hats can be admired
hanging from the pub ceiling.
The next stage of the competition sees the Waggon up against the top
pubs from neighbouring counties for the East Anglian Pub of the Year
crown; the result will be known by the end of August.

A RECORD
field of 650 runners took to the roads and lanes around Bungay in Suffolk
to contest the 8th Great East Run organised by the Bungay Black Dog Running
Club.
David Miller, of Woodbridge Shufflers Road Running Club,
led from the start to win the 20k event in a fast time of 1 hour 7 minutes
and 42 seconds. It was the first time 35-year-old Miller had entered the
Great East Run. He Said: “I really enjoyed it. It is a good course.”
Helen Cawthorne, of Redhill Road Runners, travelled from Derbyshire to
win the women’s event and came 61st overall, in a time of 1 hour
24 minutes and 30 seconds. Anne Flanagan, of Norwich Road Runners, was
second in 1 hour 25 minutes 55 seconds.
The first member of the host club to finish was Ian Taylor, who came 17th,
in 1 hour 16 minutes 31 seconds. There were also prizes in a range of
ages for men and woman this year. The run, which took place on Sunday,
was sponsored by Elgoods Brewery, who awarded a bottle of Black Dog mild
to each finisher.
There were 516 finishers in the event which attracted runners from over
20 counties. Race director John Wharton’s team of more than 90 ensured
that the event ran smoothly, despite a field that was 150 up from last
year.
